Ireland has officially launched a redesigned passport that combines cutting-edge security technology with artwork celebrating the country's landscapes, wildlife and natural heritage.

While the passport retains its familiar burgundy cover, the interior has been completely refreshed with illustrations inspired by Ireland's changing seasons, native flora and fauna, and scenic landscapes.

The new design was developed in partnership with Irish artists and businesses, with members of the public playing a key role in shaping its appearance. More than 15,000 people took part in a nationwide consultation, helping to select many of the images featured throughout the document.

Among the most popular choices was the Irish wolfhound, which now appears at various points throughout the passport alongside other iconic elements of Ireland's natural environment.

Beyond its visual redesign, the passport introduces a new generation of anti-fraud protections. Enhanced security features have been incorporated to make the document more resistant to forgery and counterfeiting, with officials saying several of the technologies are being used in a passport for the first time anywhere in the world.

The production process has also been updated to support Ireland's sustainability goals through the use of environmentally friendly security inks and more sustainable manufacturing techniques.

The redesigned passport will begin being issued by the Passport Service from today. Existing passports will remain fully valid until their stated expiry date and do not need to be replaced.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee said the new document showcases both Ireland's identity and its technological innovation.

“The new Irish passport combines some of the world's most advanced security technology with a design that proudly reflects who we are as a nation, our heritage, creativity and natural beauty.”

She added: “Together with Irish companies and artists, we have created a travel document that is both technically outstanding and unmistakably Irish.”

The redesigned passport forms part of the Government's ongoing programme to modernise Ireland's passport service, which issues travel documents to millions of Irish citizens living both at home and overseas.
