Ireland's EU Presidency is Starting This Wednesday

The presidency will last 6 months and will have different leaders and representative from around Europe coming to Ireland for meetings agreements and other negotiations.

Ireland has been the host of the EU presidency before however this upcoming period is set to be the busiest yet. Concerns have been raised over Ireland's ability and capacity to cope with any possible security issues that may arise, after drones were spotted when president Volodymyr Zelensky visited last year.

Gardaí have said they are prepared for any risks that may arise however this may lead to certain disruptions.


Jarlath Lennon the Chief Superintendent for Roads Policing, Events, Public Order and Public Safety has assured the public that "day to day people will not notice any difference, but on occasion there will be significant disruption, primarily in Dublin city centre, at various times."

"It is one of the biggest that we have ever policed in the history of the organisation. We will have significantly more numbers than people would normally see on the ground on duty, and the security of the EU presidency is the priority of An Garda Síochána over the next six months,"

Assistant Secretary General with the Office of Public Works Rosemary Collier said in a statement "There's a huge range of dinners, receptions, ministerial, informal events, meetings and bilateral meetings. The European Political Community event in November, where over 40 heads of state will come to Ireland, that's certainly the biggest political event that will ever have happened in Ireland,"

Dublin Airport

The Dublin Airport Authority has also put measures in place to deal with the influx of flights expected from travelling politicians. The have reinstated an old terminal that was decommissioned in the 1970s.

They have stated that this will be their busiest summer ever. Measures have been put in place as not to impact regular holiday goers, the EU delegates will travel through the old central building.
