Limerick and Clare will host Ireland’s first-ever EuroPride in 2028, after the West of Ireland’s joint bid was confirmed as the winner. The announcement marks a historic moment, as EuroPride—the continent’s largest Pride celebration—has never previously been held on the island of Ireland.

The successful bid was submitted by Limerick Pride, QuareClare, and The Outing Festival, collectively representing the West of Ireland. They competed against Manchester Pride, presenting their proposal at EuroPride’s annual conference in Barcelona. Among more than 120 member organisations casting votes, the West of Ireland secured the event with 70% of the votes.

The news was welcomed by Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, who described the announcement as a recognition of the region’s inclusivity. "I welcome this landmark event as a recognition of our spirit, our inclusivity, and our commitment to equality," he said.

Mayor Moran highlighted the significance of hosting EuroPride: "As host, we will welcome tens of thousands of visitors, activists, artists, and allies from across Europe and beyond to our streets, venues, and public spaces. Together we will celebrate diversity, promote visibility, and forge new connections among LGBTQ+ communities and supporters."

He also emphasised the symbolic importance for local communities: "It is saying to every kid and adult who may be asking the question to themselves, that they are welcome in the inclusive Limerick and Clare that we are continuing to build."

EuroPride is Europe’s largest international LGBTQ+ celebration, held annually in a different European city. It combines parades, festivals, cultural events, conferences, and activism, bringing together LGBTQ+ communities, allies, artists, and human rights advocates from across the continent and beyond. The event was first held in Stockholm in 1992, and since then it has been hosted by major cities including London, Madrid, Berlin, and Amsterdam.

EuroPride is not just a party—it is a platform for visibility, equality, and advocacy. It often highlights social and political issues affecting LGBTQ+ communities in the host country and across Europe. In addition to the parade, EuroPride features conferences, workshops, performances, and awards, giving participants opportunities to connect, network, and share knowledge.

Ireland has celebrated Pride in Dublin and other cities for decades, but this will be the first time EuroPride takes place on the island, marking a historic milestone for the country.

The 2028 celebration promises to shine a spotlight on Limerick and Clare, positioning the West of Ireland as a hub for LGBTQ+ visibility, culture, and connection on a European stage.
