Lord Henry Mount Charles, the Marquess Conyngham and custodian of Slane Castle, has died at the age of 74 following a long battle with cancer. His family confirmed he passed peacefully on the evening of June 18th.
A prominent figure in Irish cultural and public life, Lord Henry was widely respected for his dedication to heritage, his role in transforming Slane Castle into one of Ireland’s premier music venues, and his deep connection to the local community.
Best known for opening the historic estate to generations of concertgoers, Lord Henry brought international acts such as U2, The Rolling Stones, and Madonna to perform at the castle, helping to place Slane on the global music map. Beyond music, he was a champion of Irish heritage and preservation, maintaining the family estate with passion and purpose.
In a statement, his family described him as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, and custodian of Slane Castle,” whose “courage and unwavering spirit inspired all who knew him.” They paid tribute to his “visionary leadership,” “warmth,” and “resilience,” noting the outpouring of support the family has received in recent years.
The family also expressed their heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. James’s Hospital and the many caregivers who supported Lord Henry throughout his illness. They have asked for privacy as they grieve and reflect on his life, with funeral arrangements to remain private.
