Donald Trump has plunged Irish unity back into the political spotlight after declaring that a united Ireland is inevitable and saying it “may as well happen now”.

The US president made the remarks on the first day of his Irish visit, prompting a backlash from British political leaders, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Trump’s intervention comes despite the Irish Government seeking to keep the focus of his visit on trade, investment and the strong relationship between Ireland and the US.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said yesterday that President Trump had made similar comments about Irish unity over the past two years.

The Taoiseach and US president are due to be at Trump’s Doonbeg resort today for the final day of the Irish Open, although no formal meeting between the two men is scheduled.

Trump could also face further questions from reporters about his comments as he moves around the golf course.

The president was largely confined to a position overlooking the 18th hole yesterday, but an armoured golf buggy could allow him to get closer to the action today.

His comments on Irish unity are not the only potential source of political tension during the visit.

Trump also described President Connolly as a “terrific lady” following their meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin, but could be asked to elaborate further on their encounter today given the policy differences between them.

President Trump is expected to leave Ireland this evening, departing Doonbeg for Shannon Airport by Marine One at around 7.30pm before Air Force One takes off for the US.
