The Oireachtas Committee are expected to be told that there is "no single standalone solution" with regards to the issue of wrong-way driving on motorways.
This comes as the Transport Infrastructure Ireland are to tell the Oireachtas Transport Committee that vehicles travelling at speed against the legal flow of traffic on motorways illustrates a “low-frequency but high-severity risk”, per reports in the Irish Examiner.
Pat Maher is the director of network management for TII, and he is expected to say that both older and younger drivers are inaccurately represented in wrong way driving incidents.
This comes amid the tragic events which took place along the M50 in August, including the deaths of those five teenagers.
Mr Maher is expected to state that each time such an incident is reported, the Gardaí are informed, while automatic warning messages are activated on roadside signs. He is also expected to explain how a range of mitigation technologies are currently under development, including automated warning messages which are based on radar systems and connected vehicle technologies, sent directly to the drivers in question.
But he is also expected to tell TDs and Senators that these technologies are not yet ready to reduce these risks which these incidents bring.
Mr Maher is to tell the committee: “Instead, a combination of measures, through the greater use of new technologies, together with enhanced public awareness and more effective enforcement is needed to mitigate the problem". (Quotes according to the Irish Examiner).
News of this comes after two teenagers were also arrested when a garda car was rammed in an incident where a stolen car had been driving down the m50. This happened along the junction on the M1 and R132 on the M50, before the car was brought to a controlled stop.
