Ireland may be treated to a glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight, with the latest aurora forecast suggesting conditions could allow sightings in parts of the country.

A new map from The Magnetic Network of Ireland (MagIE) shows Ireland sitting within the wider auroral visibility zone, raising hopes that the Aurora Borealis could make an appearance later this evening.

The Northern Lights occur when charged particles from the Sun interact with gases in the Earth's atmosphere. Oxygen produces the green glow most commonly associated with the aurora, while nitrogen can create shades of blue, purple and pink.

While the strongest activity is forecast further north over the North Atlantic, counties along Ireland's northern coastline may have the best chance of catching the display if cloud cover clears. Donegal, Sligo and Mayo are among the locations expected to offer the most favourable viewing opportunities.

The forecast is based on conditions at 10pm, but Met Éireann stress that being within the aurora zone does not guarantee the lights will be visible. Weather conditions will play a major role, with forecasted rain across many areas before clearer spells develop overnight to cause an issue.

Anyone hoping to spot the phenomenon should find a dark location away from artificial light and look towards the northern horizon. Clear skies will be essential, as even moderate cloud cover can obscure the display completely and coastal areas with elevated viewpoints and a clear northern horizons are best places to watch.

Even if the lights appear faint to the naked eye, smartphone cameras and long-exposure photography can often reveal colours and detail that may otherwise go unnoticed, so be sure to take a picture.
