President Catherine Connolly is to consider the views of the Council of State on new asylum laws.

The president is to consider their views prior to making a decision on whether to bring the International Protection Bill to the Supreme Court or sign it into law.

This comes following a meeting of the Council of State, which took place at Áras an Uachtaráin and was chaired by President Connolly, which discussed the constitutionality of the legislation. Beginning at 3pm, the meeting finished just before 7pm.

Among its members include former presidents Mary Robinson, Mary McAleese and Michael D Higgins, as well as former taoisigh Enda Kenny and Leo Varadkar, who all attended this meeting, alongside Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris.

Following the meeting, a statement was released from President Connolly's office, which said that she "will now consider the members' views before making a decision as to whether to sign the bill or to refer it to the Supreme Court for a decision on the question as to whether the Bill or any specified provision or provisions thereof are repugnant to the Constitution or to any provision thereof".

President Connolly is expected to have her decision made by tomorrow night.

The Bill itself, is tied to EU Migration, and Asylum Pact which will come into effect across the EU in June. It consists of regulations regarding screening, tracking and reception conditions. It is also set to bring systematic order to asylum decisions, and set time limits in which they are made.

It has been described by Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan as the most significant reform for Irish asylum laws in the State's history.

In other news, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has insisted that his position as Fianna Fáil is not under threat. Mr Martin made these comments during a press conference with German Chancellor Friederich Merz in Berlin last week. More on this story here.
