Met Éireann have said that there is a strong chance that a period of heavy rain will soon give way to sunnier and warmer weather this weekend.
Speaking on the daily weather podcast, a meteorologist for the national forecaster, Siobhan Ryan said that Thursday would bring a “fairly dull, damp and a very wet start to the day”, with widespread heavy rain, with temperatures ranging between 13 and 18 degrees.
“The rain [will be the] heaviest for east and northeast counties, but it has already begun to ease off across western parts", she said. “The rain will become patchy and light by late morning for most of us. But the day will remain dull, damp and quite breezy, with some further patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle into the afternoon and evening".
She also added that Thursday would bring similar conditions, with patches of drizzle and light rain forecasted, with other places to remain dry for longer. Temperatures are to drop slightly to between 10 and 14 degrees, with some coastal and hill fog also expected.

As for Friday, cloudy and breezy weather is expected, as well as light rain and drizzle. This is mostly expected in northern and southern coasts later that afternoon.
Later that day, some areas will start to see sunnier weather, with temperatures hitting between 14 and 20 degrees, with counties in the southeast to remain the mildest.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Siobhan Ryan has said that drier and warmer weather is expected everywhere, with the east and southeast to experience the warmest weather.
On the podcast, she stated: “While it will dry up with some hazy sunshine, north and northwest counties could still see some lingering falls of showery rain, so a bit cooler for these parts".
“Elsewhere, though, where the sun does get through, temperatures should climb to the high teens or even low 20s, with top values over the weekend generally coming in around 17 to 22 or 23C", she added. “Saturday will still be a little bit on the breezy side, but the winds will be much lighter for Sunday and Sunday should be the warmer day".
