TG4 are set to air a special version of Mean Girls As Gaeilge on the 21st anniversary of the iconic comedy film.

Starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, Mean Girls became one of the most quotable comedy films of the 2000s — spawning a direct-to-TV sequel, a musical, and a film adaptation of said musical back in 2023.

Earlier this year, however, an Irish language short version of the film was broadcast for Seachtain na Gaeilge — which saw Cady Heron and Regina George swap the American high school lunchroom for an Irish secondary school, complete with a St Patrick’s Day pageant, and localised pop culture references.

Produced by Mumbro Top, the aptly named Cailíní Gránna represents the Irish language across the island — including accents from Galway, Dublin, Sligo, Leitrim, Wexford, Laois, Cork, Tipperary, Clare, Kilkenny, Mayo, Donegal, and Kerry — and international talent from Poland and Brazil.

The ensemble cast stars Megan O’Malley, Eilís Carey, Conrad Jones-Brangan, Caitríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Kevin Johnston, Ciarán Darcy among others — including Extra.ie’s very own Rebecca Fisher, who plays Gretchen Wieners.

Behind the scenes, the project boasts the talents of writer/director/producer/designer Hillary Bowen-Walsh, as well as cinematographer Jacek Snochowski and Rosie O’Shea, editor.

After premiering earlier this year on YouTube as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, the short will now have its TV premiere on TG4, next Saturday, October 4* at 10pm.

*We asked Rebecca why October 4 instead of the more quotable date of October 3 — she’s not sure either!
