The initiative is part of the airline’s plan to train 1,200 new pilots across Europe by 2028, with a number of recruits to come from Ireland. Although Wizz Air does not currently operate flights to Ireland, it will attend Pilot Careers Live in Dublin on October 18 to meet prospective candidates in person.
The training programme is open to applicants with no prior flying experience, making it one of the most accessible pathways into commercial aviation.
Candidates will undergo a six-month selection process followed by two years of intensive instruction, culminating in qualification as a Wizz Air pilot.
During training, participants will earn approximately €46,000, rising to €69,000 after qualification, €103,000 after two years, and up to €230,000 upon promotion to captain.
The airline says the programme offers a “unique opportunity for those looking to change careers and join one of Europe’s biggest and most sustainable carriers.”
Speaking about the initiative, Captain Phil Cullen, Head of Operations for Wizz Air’s UK division, said:
“Our commitment to training 1,200 new pilots, within the Wizz Air Group, by 2028 represents a major investment in the future of aviation and the UK’s economic landscape.”
He added:
“We’re particularly excited to expand our recruitment efforts into Ireland for the first time, and to open the door for people seeking a career change. Wizz Air is proud to offer clear career progression and industry-leading support to all of our pilots, from training through to Captain.”
The recruitment drive aligns with Wizz Air’s European expansion strategy, as it aims to operate 500 aircraft by 2030. Currently, the airline has a fleet of 243 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, serving over 62 million passengers on 750 routes across 54 countries.
This move also supports broader industry efforts to tackle pilot shortages and strengthen aviation skills across Europe. By covering all training costs and providing structured career progression, Wizz Air positions itself as a competitive and attractive option for aspiring pilots.
Aspiring pilots will have the chance to meet Wizz Air’s recruitment team at Pilot Careers Live in Dublin on October 18, where they can learn more about the fully funded training programme and available career pathways.
The event will also feature Aer Lingus, Ryanair, and several aviation training organisations, showcasing the breadth of opportunities in the aviation sector and promoting collaboration and talent development across the industry.
