For decades, Anna Wintour has loomed large over the fashion industry like a figure carved in ice. Now, at 75, she’s not leaving Vogue — she’s simply moving the chessboard.
On Thursday, Wintour informed staff that she is appointing a new head of editorial content at American Vogue, a role she has owned for 37 years. But this is no retirement. It’s a strategic evolution. The announcement only underlines what the industry has already known: Wintour has outgrown the very masthead that made her a household name.
As Business of Fashion pointed out, Wintour’s responsibilities have already extended far beyond the glossy walls of American Vogue. She now oversees a vast portfolio under the Condé Nast banner — including eight international Vogue editions, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Wired — everything, in fact, except the New Yorker. Her expanded role necessitated a structural rethink. What’s being presented as delegation may be, in reality, a consolidation of empire.
“Anybody in a creative field knows how essential it is never to stop growing,” Wintour told staff, while praising the “next generation” of editors. The implication was clear: she’s preparing them, guiding them — but she’s still very much in control.
She retains her titles of Global Editorial Director of Vogue and Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast. The incoming head of American Vogue will report to her directly.
After surviving internal challenges and weathering cultural reckonings over representation in the early 2020s, Wintour didn’t fade into the background — she gained more power. The timing of this reshuffle is revealing: it arrives just as Wintour places trusted confidant Mark Guiducci at the top of Vanity Fair, further reinforcing her grip on the Condé Nast narrative.
