Barry Keoghan has broken his silence about his relationship with singer Sabrina Carpenter.
The actor dated Carpenter in 2024, and even appeared in her track, 'Please Please Please'.
However, the couple split up later that year amid rumours that Keoghan had been unfaithful, rumours which were never proven.
That year also saw Keoghan step away from social media due to a crescendo of online abuse, where he claimed that people had even made threats to his family following his split with Carpenter. He also said that the comments were so bad, he even considered quitting acting.
Keoghan recently appeared on 'Friends Keeps Secrets', a video podcast hosted by Lil Dicky, Dave Burd and Kristin Batalucco, where he opened up about his split with Carpenter and their subsequent split.
"I feel in a safe space to say this, but I have been avoiding stuff. I came off Instagram and social profiles. I’ve stopped going to events. I’ve stopped just socialising", Keoghan said. "It's because there's a narrative out there that was never really even spoken on - a narrative that's not true, and I never confirmed or said anything about it...You know, I just disappeared".
He continued: "Unfortunately, having a relationship in the public eye, we all know this from our own stories, but it gets put out there, and it's like … yeah, amplified".
"I’m not asking for people to become my fan and like me because that’s not normal. I’m asking for people to stop assuming and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me and dragging me down in any way you can,' he said. 'I’m not saying this for pity. Why is it cool to hop on and beat someone up?".
Keoghan refrained from saying anything more about the relationship as he wanted to respect the Carpenter's privacy.
The Irish actor he has largely stayed away from public life as well as social media, such was the level of media scrutiny and abuse he has faced recently.
Sabrina Carpenter has never commented publicly on the relationship.
