David Beckham has described being awarded a knighthood as "truly humbling".
The former footballer was awarded the title in the King's Birthday Honours, alongside The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey and actor Gary Oldman. Elsewhere, singer/actress Elaine Page, novelist Pat Baker and former defence secretary Penny Mordaunt were awarded damehoods.
MBEs were awarded to Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, as well as darts player Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.
Speaking to PA News Agency, David Beckham said it was an "emotional moment" to be awarded a Knighthood.
"Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour", he said. "To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career, and literally a boyhood dream come true".
The former England captain added that he had been fortunate to "represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation".
"I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment".
"It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family".
Beckham who played for Manchester United and Real Madrid in a stellar career on the pitch, was previously awarded an OBE in 2003.
