Domhnall Gleeson has said it was “great” to be part of Taylor Swift’s music video for Opalite — but the Irish actor remained tight-lipped when asked whether he had been invited to the singer’s upcoming wedding.
Speaking in Los Angeles after accepting an Oscar Wilde Award, the Dublin star reflected on appearing in the nearly six-minute video, which features him alongside Cillian Murphy.
“It was great to be part of it,” Gleeson said when asked about the project.
However, when the topic turned to Swift’s rumoured wedding plans, the actor declined to comment on whether he had received an invitation.
Opalite video features Irish stars
The Opalite video, directed by Taylor Swift, was released on Apple Music and Spotify on Friday following weeks of speculation among fans.
In the cinematic clip, Swift and Gleeson play love interests described as “lonely woman” and “lonely man”, while Oscar-winning Cork actor Cillian Murphy also makes an appearance.
Rumours of Gleeson’s involvement began circulating shortly before the release, when promotional billboards for the track appeared online.
Fans had also revisited a moment from The Graham Norton Show last October, when Swift praised Gleeson’s performance in the sitcom The Paper.
“I loved it,” Swift said during the interview.
Murphy then joked about Gleeson’s on-screen talents, saying: “It’s worth watching for Domhnall’s dancing alone.”
Gleeson replied at the time: “I’m hoping to get into a Taylor Swift music video.”
Honoured at Oscar Wilde Awards
Gleeson was speaking while attending the 20th annual Oscar Wilde Awards at the Ebell of Los Angeles, where he was recognised for his contribution to film and television.
The awards ceremony, hosted by the US-Ireland Alliance, celebrates Irish achievements in the entertainment industry and is a regular fixture in the pre-Oscars calendar.
Reflecting on the milestone event, Gleeson said it felt particularly meaningful to attend.
“It feels especially nice because this is the 20th anniversary of the awards and it’s also about 20 years since I first started working in America,” he said.
The actor also spoke about the strong creative connection between Ireland and the United States.
“I feel like I have been accepted as an artist by some of my favourite American artists, so the US-Irish thing is a great way of bringing people together.”
Praise for Irish talent
Gleeson received his award from Star Wars director J.J. Abrams, who praised the continued influence of Irish artists in film and television.
“There have been some incredible performances and productions thanks to the Irish,” Abrams said.
The ceremony was supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen, and featured musical performances from Irish singer Dermot Kennedy.
