Emmerdale star Chris Coghill is to reprise his role as Kevin Townsend in the soap.

The actor who appeared on the screens last Autumn, was involved in a number of high profile storylines, including escaping the clutches of serial killer, John Sugden, as well as being revealed as the long lost father of Lewis Barton.

Last Autumn saw Kevin Townsend introduced as the estranged husband of Robert Sugden, played by Ryan Hawley, with the pair marrying while in prison together.

Eventually, Coghill's character left the show earlier this year following a brief stint of the Christmas period. He left the Dales following a dramatic reveal of his long-lost son, who remains unaware of the identity of his father.

Now, Chris Coghill will return to the Dales as Kevin Townsend, which is likely to cause some trouble for the locals.

Speaking about this, Kevin Coghill said he was "really pleased" to return to the soap as Kevin Townsend.

"I'm really pleased to be returning to Emmerdale. I had a brilliant time last year", Coghill said. "Kev is a complex character that I love playing. He has psychopathic tendencies but also an energy and vulnerability that I think makes him pretty unique".

"I'm properly looking forward to getting back at it".

Speaking about this news, Emmerdale producer, Laura Shaw said: "Both Chris and the character of Kev made a massive impact on the show last year, so Chris is most definitely back by popular  demand.

"With Kev's son, Lewis, in the village still unaware of who his father is, it's safe to say that there's a lot of unfinished business and drama ahead".

Prior to this, Kevin Coghill also starred in EastEnders as villain Tony King, who was involved in a storyline where his partner Bianca Jackson discovered that he had been abusing her daughter, Whitney. He has also starred in Slow Horses and Shameless.

Back in January, another soap, Coronation Street announced that beloved character Ken Barlow would never be killed off, with actor William Roache effectively offered a job for life should he like to remain on the cobbles. More on this story here.
