Love Actually Actress Joanna "Jo" Bacon Dies at 72

Loading

Joanna “Jo” Bacon, a mainstay of British theatre and a scene-stealing presence on screen, has died aged 72 following what the Harlow Theatre Company described as “a short and brave battle with cancer.” Her death on June 14 was announced by the group she helped define since its very inception in 1978.

Bacon’s name may not have been plastered across marquees with the regularity of Hollywood titans, but within the theatre world and among discerning TV and film viewers, her presence carried weight. Authority. Depth. Whether it was delivering complex dramatic turns on stage or embodying subtle domestic roles in television dramas, she brought a quiet ferocity to everything she touched.

Perhaps best known to wider audiences as Natalie’s mum in Love Actually, Bacon’s performance, however brief, stood out in a film packed with household names. There’s a warmth and comic beat to her portrayal that seasoned the film with something more grounded. Bacon did what true character actors do best: add texture, make you believe, leave an impression.

Her television work reflected the same rich quality. Recently, she delivered a standout performance as Jackie across four series of Breeders and portrayed Phylis in the acclaimed 2024 crime miniseries Moonflower Murders. Before that, she appeared in She Will, Benediction, and Mourning Sickness, each performance lending more weight to her status as an actor who was never merely in a scene—she anchored it.

A latecomer to full-time acting, Bacon left a job in publishing to pursue theatre, and her success in that realm was considerable. As Portia in The Merchant of Venice, Beverly in Abigail’s Party, and Maddie in Dirty Linen, her versatility was proven. But more than roles, what her colleagues remember most is her energy: her passion, wit, and critical yet generous eye, always visible from the front row when she wasn’t on stage herself.

“She never forgot to praise our work,” said the Harlow Theatre Company in their heartfelt statement. “Thank you, Jo.”

Bacon didn’t chase stardom, she chased the truth in performance. And in doing so, she earned something greater than celebrity: admiration, gratitude, and respect.
