Nicole Kidman has opened up about the intense and transformative experience of filming Moulin Rouge! Speaking in a GQ interview, the Australian actress reflected on what it was like to step into the high-pressure world created by director Baz Luhrmann, and how the project tested her limits as a young performer.
Kidman, who starred as the enchanting courtesan Satine, began by recalling the immersive process that defined the film’s creation. “Baz Luhrmann, when he starts, he’s like, ‘Okay, we’re all going to show up, and we’re all going to live together,’” she remembered. “We spent almost eight weeks working on the scenes, learning to sing, learning to dance. Basically, it felt like we were in an intense drama school.”
The actress explained that while she had been thrilled to take on the role, the preparation quickly revealed just how challenging the film would be. “I love the creative process with Baz. When I got the role, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing. I get to do a musical. I love Satine.’ And then when we started, I was like, ‘I’m not going to be able to deliver for him.’ Because it was like—singing live, dancing, on top of all the comedy and the drama. It felt like an out-of-reach film. So it was always a struggle to try and go, ‘I’m good enough, and I can play Satine.’”
Released in 2001, Moulin Rouge! became a defining moment in both Kidman’s and Ewan McGregor’s careers. “For Ewan McGregor and I, that was the beginning for both of us,” Kidman reflected. Their onscreen chemistry helped turn the musical romance into an enduring classic, earning Kidman her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
The role of Satine demanded everything from her—physically, vocally, and emotionally.
