Nicole Kidman has opened up about the intense and transformative experience of filming Moulin Rouge! Speaking in a GQ interview, the Australian actress reflected on what it was like to step into the high-pressure world created by director Baz Luhrmann, and how the project tested her limits as a young performer.

Kidman, who starred as the enchanting courtesan Satine, began by recalling the immersive process that defined the film’s creation. “Baz Luhrmann, when he starts, he’s like, ‘Okay, we’re all going to show up, and we’re all going to live together,’” she remembered. “We spent almost eight weeks working on the scenes, learning to sing, learning to dance. Basically, it felt like we were in an intense drama school.”

The actress explained that while she had been thrilled to take on the role, the preparation quickly revealed just how challenging the film would be. “I love the creative process with Baz. When I got the role, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing. I get to do a musical. I love Satine.’ And then when we started, I was like, ‘I’m not going to be able to deliver for him.’ Because it was like—singing live, dancing, on top of all the comedy and the drama. It felt like an out-of-reach film. So it was always a struggle to try and go, ‘I’m good enough, and I can play Satine.’”

Released in 2001, Moulin Rouge! became a defining moment in both Kidman’s and Ewan McGregor’s careers. “For Ewan McGregor and I, that was the beginning for both of us,” Kidman reflected. Their onscreen chemistry helped turn the musical romance into an enduring classic, earning Kidman her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

The role of Satine demanded everything from her—physically, vocally, and emotionally. Under Luhrmann’s direction, the set became a creative laboratory, where cast and crew were pushed to explore, improvise, and commit fully to the heightened world of 19th-century Paris. The result was a visually spectacular film that would go on to influence an entire generation of movie musicals.

For Micole Kidman, however, the experience was as exhausting as it was rewarding. The production was famously grueling; she sustained multiple injuries during filming, including broken ribs and a torn knee cartilage, as a result of the elaborate choreography and corseted costumes. Yet, despite the pain, her performance as the tragic cabaret star remains one of her most celebrated.

Moulin Rouge! marked a turning point in Kidman’s career. Before Luhrmann’s musical, she was already an established name, thanks to films like To Die For (1995), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), which she starred in alongside her then-husband Tom Cruise. But Moulin Rouge! catapulted her into a new creative space—one that blended emotional vulnerability with theatrical spectacle.

In the years following the film’s release, Kidman solidified her reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and daring actresses. She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2003 for her transformative performance as Virginia Woolf in The Hours. Over the next two decades, she moved fluidly between genres—taking on thrillers like The Others, dramas like Rabbit Hole (which earned her another Oscar nomination), and sweeping epics such as Australia, where she reunited with Luhrmann.

Her television work has also been widely acclaimed. Her performances in Big Little Lies and The Undoing showcased her remarkable ability to convey both fragility and strength, earning her multiple Emmy Awards and Golden Globes. More recently, she took on the role of Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos, a part that earned her yet another Oscar nomination and praise for her daring approach to complex, real-life characters.

But despite a career filled with critical success, Kidman still looks back at Moulin Rouge! as one of her most formative experiences. “That film taught me to trust the process, even when it feels impossible,” she has said in past interviews. “Baz pushed me to believe in myself in ways I never had before. It was terrifying, but also exhilarating.”

Her collaboration with Luhrmann has continued over the years, a creative partnership built on mutual trust and artistic daring. Together, they share a passion for storytelling that blends beauty, emotion, and risk—something Kidman clearly thrives on.

Now, more than two decades after Moulin Rouge! first dazzled audiences, Kidman remains one of cinema’s most respected figures. Her willingness to push boundaries, embrace vulnerability, and take on the impossible is exactly what made her portrayal of Satine so unforgettable.

As she told GQ, “It was like a crash course in everything—singing, dancing, acting, loving, breaking. I was completely out of my depth, but that’s what made it so thrilling. I learned that fear can be a good thing if you let it drive you to something real.”
