A souvenir ticket handed out at Cruz Beckham’s headline show in Cardiff has sparked surprise after listing the venue location as “Cardiff, England” rather than Wales.
The misprint appeared on tickets distributed during Friday night’s performance at Clwb Ifor Bach, a venue long associated with the promotion of Welsh language and culture. The show marked the only Welsh date on Cruz Beckham and The Breakers’ first headline tour.
Representatives for the band, Dawbell, and the venue have been approached for comment.
Audience member Jason Erickson, 52, from Dinas Powys in the Vale of Glamorgan, said he initially thought the error might have been an oversight. “It’s [written] so tiny, isn’t it, on the ticket, you can quite easily overlook it, so I kind of get it,” he said.
However, he added that greater care might have been expected given the significance of the location. “You would expect them to pick something like that up… being the only Welsh gig. You kind of think, let’s make sure we get that on the money.”
Despite the geographical slip, Erickson stressed he was not offended. “I’m a proud Welshman but it hasn’t really upset me,” he said.
Founded more than 40 years ago as a members’ club for Welsh speakers in the capital, Clwb Ifor Bach has built a reputation as a launchpad for emerging artists. Acts such as Coldplay, Mark Ronson, and The Killers all performed there early in their careers.
The Cardiff date forms part of Cruz Beckham’s 13-show UK and European tour, which began in Birmingham and will conclude with two London performances later this month. The 20-year-old singer and guitarist — the youngest son of David Beckham and Victoria Beckham — is seeking to establish himself as a solo artist after previously performing under different names and supporting Welsh indie band The Royston Club.
Erickson praised the performance, describing Beckham as a “good guitarist, good singer” and noting the crowd of around 80 people appeared to enjoy the set.
Reviewing the opening night in Birmingham, the BBC’s Ian Youngs wrote that Cruz has “enough charisma and energy to make it”, though he suggested the music “ultimately falls short of the legends he’s trying to replicate” after the singer told the audience: “I want to be John Lennon.”
While the tour has attracted attention for reasons beyond music in recent months, Friday’s focus in Cardiff remained on the stage — and a small but noticeable printing error that placed the Welsh capital across the border.
