Susan Sarandon has said that she has lost roles over her support for Palestine, and that "agencies are telling people not to hire me."
Sarandon has openly supported Palestine for years and was reportedly dropped by her agency, UTA, following comments she made at a rally in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks in 2023.
“There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country," she said at the time, and later apologised for her remarks. Earlier this year, Sarandon said she felt she had been shunned by the entertainment industry for speaking out in support of a ceasefire in Gaza.
According to Variety, the Oscar winning actress was asked at the Venice Film Festival if she thinks the narrative in Hollywood is changing when it comes to the conflict in Gaza.
“I think that the narrative has completely changed in terms of historical relevance of Palestine and the ties of Zionists with America and our politics. That has been a major revelation for people. How much money the United States gives to Israel, nobody really understood that,” Sarandon said.
“I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that’s the power structure. I think within the people, certainly internationally, I feel welcome," she continued.
Sarandon then thanked director Andrea Pallaoro, of the new film that she is starring in titled 'The Echo Chamber'. She thanked him as he "doesn't listen to the warnings."
