It was, depending on your outlook, either a perfect tabloid storm or a storybook romance: a Hollywood megastar in his mid-fifties, fresh from a high-profile life, meeting a luminous young actor not yet 30 and deciding, almost instantly, that this was it. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas married in 2000, the 25-year age gap practically a co-star in the coverage. The prevailing narrative at the time? That it was doomed.
“And they said it would never last!” Zeta-Jones told The Sun with the sort of light, satisfied delivery that only comes after proving people wrong for a quarter of a century. This November, they celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.
She describes marriage as “a journey of learning and loving and fun,” stressing that the milestone is “really quite thrilling.” The longevity clearly means something personal to her: “I remember my mum and dad celebrating theirs.”
The story began in 1998. Michael, then 54, introduced himself to the Mask of Zorro star in a bar. She was 29, riding the crest of her Hollywood breakthrough. The difference in age was impossible for the press to ignore, and, for many commentators, enough reason to write the whole thing off.
But 25 years, two children, Dylan, now 25, and Carys, 22, and an enduring career apiece later, they’ve outlasted every premature obituary for their relationship. Even a high-profile 2013 separation wasn’t the end; they reconciled in 2014.
“It’s impossible for there not to be ups and downs if you live with the same person and wake up with them every day,” Catherine said in a 2023 interview. “I’ve been waking up to Mike for nearly 25 years… I never really feel that he’s 25 years older than me. I remember people saying: ‘When you’re 50, he’s going to be 75.’ Well, that’s just maths.”
