Roy Keane has taken aim at the WAGs who sit in the stands during the games at the FIFA World Cup.
The former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain spoke about them, while sitting with Gary Neville and Ian Wright on their popular podcast show, The Overlap, where they also chatted about all things sport.
The term 'WAG' was initially coined in the British media in 2002, before catching fire during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Baden-Baden, Germany. Here, the wives and girlfriends of the English players particularly caught fire, as they were dolled up to the nines as they sat in the stands watching their partners play in the matches.
At the time, these partners included Victoria Beckham, Coleen Rooney and Cheryl Cole, who was married to Ashley Cole at the time, and they were splashed all over the media at the time.
While sitting with Neville and Wright, Keane stated that he cannot stand the wives and girlfriends of footballers at these events and how they carry on, and his general abhor for the existing WAG culture.
Opening up about what he is finding a cause of irritation, Keane instantly had the rest of the panel reduced to tears.
"The World Cup, when all the players' wives and families are going to the match, all the wives are in the jerseys with the players' names on the back...WOW", Keane exclaimed.
He continued: "Children is fine, but the wives and partners wearing their jerseys, with their name on the back. wow".
In response, Ian Wright who was trying to construct a sentence in the midst of his huge guffaw, said: "I don't mind that".
Keane replied: "You not with me on that page? A year later, they are separated, most of them. And they're all getting pictures, and they're all getting pictures, and they're pointing at a Jimmy or Johnny on the back, wow. We know who you are married to".
"Children is fine, the partners is ridiculous. All sitting in the same family section, I've got my jersey, have you got yours? I'm not having it".
Wright insisted: "I don't mind it Roy... Her husband is playing and she's proud of him and she wants to wear his shirt, it seems as simple as that".
However, Roy Keane doubled down on his comments, claiming that the wives and girlfriends only appear at World Cups.
"They only do it at the World Cup. You don't see it at Old Trafford or Anfield every week. So what's with the World Cup?", he said. "Imagine a woman going, 'I'm going to put a football jersey on today with my husband's name on the back... Wow".
