The Father of two was a familiar face on our screens. Most well known for his roles as Mr. Farrell in Brooklyn, Garda Peadar Kearney in Banshees of Inisherin, and many others including shows and movies such as Love/Hate, War Horse and The Guard.
Lydon, who was originally from England, moved to Wexford at 9 years old with his family. Gary had said moving to Ireland was a "shock to the system,". As a young boy moving to a new country made him feel like he didn't quite fit in. He then became drawn to characters who he could identify with. In the 1980's Lydon began acting in Billy Roche's Wexford Trilogy of plays. Before long he was acting in the Bush theater in London.
From stage to cinema Lydon soon became well known across our screens. His breakthrough role on TV was as Patrick Murray in the series The Clinic from 2003 to 2009. This role landed Lydon two IFTA's for his star performances.
Elizabeth Whyte of Wexford Arts Centre, made a heartfelt statement about Lydon, saying "Gary had honed his craft as one of the finest actors in Ireland on the Wexford Arts Centre stage in many of Billy Roche's plays."
"The lights in the theatre world are dimmer due to the loss of Gary, but we will cherish the memories of his performances with reverence."
Arrangements for his funeral are yet to be announced.
