The 56 year old singer revealed that she has finished a completley new album, although she did not reveal many details, she discussed in an interview that fans can expect her trademarked ballads. This will be Carey's 16th studio album in the span of her 35 year long career.
Carey sat down with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Apple Music. She joined them during a special live broadcast and discussed her most recent single "Type Dangerous". Carey released this new single last month via Gamma, the company founded by former Apple Music executive Larry Jackson. The track samples Eric B and Rakims 1986 song 'Eric B Is President', this song became her 50th BillBoard Hot 100 hit.
Carey performed alongside Rakim at the BET 2025 awards, where she won her first BET award ever. She told Lowe and Darden that, "I've always loved ‘Eric B. Is President.’ It wasn’t something like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna flip this’... I just wouldn’t think of doing it,” she continued to explain "But then we were in this restaurant in Aspen and they had different music on, and they played ‘Eric B. Is President’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! I love this song!’ We ended up in the studio a couple months later and we did it.”
Lowe described Carey's new single as heavy and that it has real weight to it, shortly before shifting the focus on other new music as he asked her if fans could expect new music from her soon. To which she responded with, "The album coming out. I don’t wanna tell too much about it because I just don’t want to reveal the whole thing. It’s finished.” Carey confirmed that we would be getting some Mariah ballads and that a second single was due to be released soon, however we are still waiting for a date and album title to be confirmed. Carey expresses how excited she is for the release of the second single as she says "I’m very excited about it. It’s very summery. I like the beat as well.” The anticipated album will have 11 or 12 songs according to Carey in her interview.
The interview with Lowe and Darden was shared to Instagram, fans in the comments expressed their excitement for the new album, as one user stated "MARIAH BALLADS?!?! Say less. we are READY QUEEN!!!", another stated "Let’s hope it’s 12 … actually make it 14."
