Britney Spears' Song Re Enters The Charts As Justin Timberlake Releases New Single

A fan joke about Justin Timberlake's new single 'Selfish' has led to another song from his ex girlfriend Britney Spears soaring back into the charts.

This week saw Timberlake announce plans to release his first new solo album since 2018's Man Of The Woods. The Sexy Back singer's new album Everything I Thought I Was was announced with the new single Selfish.

Following this, fans were quick to point out that Spears also released a song called Selfish, which arrived on the deluxe version of her 2011 album, Femme Fatale. At one stage the track had entered the top 40 chart, and was even in the top 10 on iTunes. 

This track has stormed back into the charts, after a fan had joked on social media that Spears was only releasing Selfish this week.

"started as a joke"

Taking to X, the fan said that it "started as a joke", when Timberlake announced his song.

“Then we all joined in, saying that Britney Spears was coming back with a ‘brand’ new song", the fan said.  “I still can’t believe that it became so big, and we see the results we see now". 

“We are all so happy to see her song make a comeback after all these years!”.

The couple dated for three years, before splitting up in 2002, with Timberlake releasing 'Cry Me A River' that same year. The song's music video featured a blonde woman, fuelling rumours that Britney Spears has been unfaithful in their relationship.

After being freed of her conservatorship, Britney Spears released her memoir 'The Woman In Me', where she did admit that she kissed choreographer Wade Robson, but insisted that Timberlake was unfaithful first.

Justin Timberlake did come under scrutiny following the release of this memoir, after Spears had claimed in the book that she had been portrayed by the media as "a harlot who'd broken the heart of America's golden boy", when in fact she was left "comatose in Louisiana", while her ex partner was "happily running around Hollywood".  

Following the release of Spears' 2021 documentary 'Framing Britney Spears', Justin Timberlake apologised to his ex girlfriend.

“I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right,” he wrote in part in an Instagram post on Friday. “I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism".
