Child actor Vega has revealed that Katie Taylor told her she was proud of her for taking on the role of the boxing champion in a new theatre production.

Speaking exclusively to Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio, Vega opened up to Colm about playing a young Taylor in HERstory, a two-part live experience that will tour theatres across Ireland in 2027.

HERstory will be released in May 2027 in select theaters across Ireland.

When Colm asked Vega what it was like meeting Taylor, she said: “She's really nice. She said she was proud that I was playing her!”

Vega will portray Taylor between the ages of nine and twelve, bringing the early years of the Bray boxer’s life to the stage.

She also revealed that she did not have to audition for the role. Director Andrew Flynn, whom she had worked with before, personally contacted her mother to ask if Vega would be interested in playing the young sporting star in his latest project.

Despite taking on the role of one of Ireland’s most successful boxers, Vega will not be putting her own boxing skills to the test.

When Colm asked if she had to do any boxing training for the part, she laughed and replied: “No! I'm an actor.”

HERstory will explore Taylor’s journey from her childhood in Bray through to the end of her amateur boxing career in 2016.

The theatrical performance will be followed by a live on-stage interview with BBC boxing journalist, broadcaster and author Steve Bunce.

Directed by Flynn, Director of Theatre at Galway Arts Centre, and produced by Taylor’s manager Brian Peters, the production will explore the personal story behind the sporting legend, including her determination to make female boxing a reality and the challenges she faced throughout her career.

Taylor launched the production in Dublin earlier this week, saying she hoped the events would give audiences a new insight into her story and inspire a new generation.

The tour will open in May 2027 at Siamsa Tíre in Tralee before travelling to the Theatre Royal in Waterford, the National Opera House in Wexford and the Town Hall Theatre in Galway.

Further performances are planned for The Helix in Dublin on September 25 and the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar on October 2.

Tickets for the May performances are on sale now, while tickets for the Dublin and Castlebar dates are expected to go on sale later this week.
