Kristen Bell has shared the unusual way her husband, Dax Shepard, flirts with her, revealing that his habit of complimenting strangers is actually one of the things that keeps the spark alive in their marriage.
The Frozen star opened up about their relationship during an appearance on Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast on October 26, chatting with her Nobody Wants This co-stars about how the couple show affection for one another.

Bell explained that when they go out for dinner, Shepard often compliments their waiter or waitress, praising their appearance in a way that might seem like flirting with someone else.
“If we go to a dinner or something, there's a couple things Dax does where he doesn't have to look up and wink at me, but I know that he's just being the best boy,” she said.
“We'll be at dinner and he'll say to the waiter [or] waitress, he'll go, ‘Wow, you have incredible eyelashes, gorgeous eyes, great job.’”

When Shepard's co-host Monica Padman suggested that he was actually flirting with the restaurant staff, Bell explained that she sees things differently.
“That's flirting with me because he just made someone else feel good,” she said.
Bell went on to explain that the gesture is not about Shepard trying to attract someone else's attention, but rather about the way he treats people around him.
“Let's say it is a girl; he's gonna have zero interaction with this girl for the rest of his life,” she explained. “The chances of him ever having another conversation with her are so microscopic.”
She added that when Shepard “actively smiles at people and gives them compliments”, she sees it as a sign that he is flirting with her, too.

The couple, who married in 2013, have never been particularly shy about sharing the more unconventional aspects of their relationship.
Last October, Bell marked their 12th wedding anniversary with an Instagram post featuring a rather unexpected tribute to her husband.
Referencing an episode of Dateline, she joked about a conversation in which Shepard reassured her that he would never kill her, despite the supposed incentives he might have to do so.

The post quickly attracted attention for its dark humour, which has become something of a trademark of the couple's public relationship.
Despite their playful approach to romance, Bell has also spoken about the deeper connection they share.
Speaking to SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live in October 2025, she explained that their shared creativity helps them understand one another and keeps their relationship strong.
“We understand each other's highs and lows and excitements and complaints,” she said. “We're both creative, so we can get deep into some random conversation and just feel like we're creating something together.”
