Popular fitness brand, Decathlon is set to open its first Cork store next month.

In March, the store announced its plans to open a new store in Douglas by the end of the summer.

An exact date is yet to be confirmed, however they have stated that they expect to open in Douglas in mid-October.

According to CorkBeo, the brand first became popular in France in the 1970s and now has more than 1,900 stores in 82 countries.

The news outlet CorkBeo has stated that the brand new store is part of a partnership with Tesco and will operate next to the supermarket in the Douglas Shopping Centre.

Decathlon's PR team, Presenceplus announced the news of the Cork store on their Instagram page. In their statement they said: "Big news for Cork! Our client @decathlon_ireland is coming to Douglas Village Shopping Centre this summer, and it’s landing right inside Tesco! That means you can grab everything from football boots to running gear, camping kit to cycling essentials, all at the same time as picking up your weekly shop!"

"This brand-new space will be packed with gear for every sport and every level, plus handy services like Click & Collect and Buyback to keep your kit in play for longer. From sea swims to GAA, marina cycles to mountain hikes, Cork knows how to stay active and we can’t wait to head down as soon as the new store opens! 💪🏼," their statement continued.

The new store in Douglas aims to cater to everyone and will also operate a buyback service where customers can trade in used gear for store credit.

Following the announcement of the brand new store, Head of Property at Douglas Village Shopping Centre, Simon Cooper said: “Douglas Village Shopping Centre has always been focused on creating a vibrant, relevant destination for the local community, and this partnership between Decathlon and Tesco is a perfect reflection of that vision."

"Welcoming a globally recognised brand like Decathlon strengthens our retail offering and enhances the overall experience for our visitors. We’re excited to see this new concept come to life and to provide customers with even greater choice, convenience and reasons to visit the centre," Cooper continued.
