The violent death of an inmate at Dublin's Wheatfield Prison is the subject of an investigation.
The victim, who is reportedly aged in his late 30s, died just after 10pm on Thursday night, following a fatal assault at the prison. Emergency services attended the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead.
It was confirmed that officials have opened up an investigation into this death, to determine if the victim suffered knife injuries during the violent assault involving another inmate. Separate investigations are now underway.
In a statement, the Irish Prison Service said that they “can confirm a death in custody at Wheatfield Prison on 13 August 2026".
“All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant", the spokesperson said. “The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office. The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends".
