Man 30s Dead Following Suspected Theft On Henry Street

An investigation is underway on Henry Street after a man in his 30s died following an alleged shoplifting incident on Friday evening.

Gardaí were called to the scene at around 5pm after security staff detained a man suspected of theft. During an attempt to escape, the suspect reportedly injured a man in his 80s, who was taken to the Mater Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The detained man later became unresponsive at the scene and was subsequently pronounced dead at the Mater Hospital.

The area has since undergone a forensic examination, and a post-mortem examination is being carried out.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has video footage from the Henry Street area between 5pm and 5:30pm, to contact them at 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The incident has also been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Gardaí confirmed.
