A medal has been awarded to the family member of the Garda, Kevin Flatly, who died on duty last year.

The Wife and Father of Flatly received the medal at the garda memorial event in Dublin, from the Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan and the Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly.

The father of two died while preforming a routine speeding check in North County Dublin.

The Garda Memorial Service was held in Dublin Castle Gardens to commemorate the 90 Gardaí who have died while on duty since the force began.

Mr Kelly stated that the incident was "very close to our hearts,"

Adding: “It is a day when we can gather in these beautiful surroundings and remember all those we have lost in service.

“It is a day to remind ourselves of those who have been taken from us too soon but whose light continues to shine brightly in our hearts.”

“We remember the light they brought our lives, the love they had for their families, their communities and their friends.

“We remember their dedication and commitment to their duties as gardai.

“We remember the pride they had in doing this important work and their contribution to society.

“It is a loss we all share.”

The Minister for Justice shared that the 90 Gardaí who have died while on service sacrificed their lives while insuring the safety of our people and our state, and the that these sacrifices were not made in vain.

He ended his statement by saying “Today allows us to celebrate the role An Garda Siochana has played in creating the safe and vibrant Ireland we live in today.”
