A 33-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with the death of his mother following an alleged assault in Galway over the weekend.
Milena Ostojic, 65, died at University Hospital Galway in the early hours of Saturday morning after sustaining serious injuries at her home at Claí Mór, Ballybrit, on Friday night.
Dubravko Ostojic, of no fixed abode, appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court, where he was charged with assault causing harm. He did not speak during the brief hearing.
Detective Garda Gerry Carroll told the court that the accused was charged at Galway Garda Station shortly after 5.45pm on Sunday evening. “Investigations into his mother’s death are continuing,” he said, adding that “other charges may follow.”
The court heard that the investigation into Ms Ostojic’s death remains ongoing.
A defence application for bail was refused due to the seriousness of the charge. Judge Gerard Furlong remanded Mr Ostojic in custody, ordering that he appear again via videolink before Galway District Court.
There was no objection to an application for legal aid by defence solicitor John Martin.
Judge Furlong also directed that the accused be provided with appropriate medical and psychiatric attention while in custody, and requested that a psychiatric report be compiled as soon as possible.
