The Dunboyne singer appeared at 9pm in a vintage-inspired blue dress and initially suggested that the audience was about to see a different side of her. After bringing the music to a sudden halt, she told the crowd that something had changed before revealing the reason: she wanted to pay tribute to Parton, who died earlier in the week aged 80.
CMAT then launched into a rendition of Jolene, giving the country classic an emotional opening to what would become a hugely energetic hour-long performance.
The tribute also highlighted the connection between two artists known for their distinctive personalities, fearless performances and ability to combine humour with genuine emotion. CMAT is know for her love of Dolly Parton and has spoken at length about the country singer's influence on her own music.
CMAT's appearance was particularly significant given that her Electric Picnic performance had been in doubt only a day earlier. She had been forced to cancel her scheduled appearance at Rock en Seine in Paris after becoming ill with gastroenteritis. By Saturday evening, however, she had recovered sufficiently to take the Main Stage, and there was little evidence of the previous day's difficulties.
The rain that had disrupted parts of the festival had also eased by the time her set began, allowing the performance to unfold in front of a packed and enthusiastic crowd.
CMAT moved through a set packed with songs from across her career, including EURO-COUNTRY, When a Good Man Cries, The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station, I Don't Really Care For You, Take a Sexy Picture of Me, Aw, Shoot!, I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby! and Stay For Something.
Saturday's performance also carried a strong sense of personal history for the singer. Electric Picnic was the first festival she ever attended, and her rise through the festival's stages has mirrored her rapid ascent as an artist. She first appeared at Rankin's Wood in 2022 before playing the Electric Arena in 2024.
Two years later, she was standing on the festival's Main Stage ahead of Gorillaz.
The scale of that progression was not lost on CMAT. She told the audience how much the occasion meant to her, describing the Irish crowd as particularly special because of the understanding she feels from playing in her home country.
The response from the audience reflected that connection. Fans sang along, danced and raised their phones throughout the performance, while supporters from her native Dunboyne received a special acknowledgement from the stage.
The singer also marked the first anniversary of her third album, EURO-COUNTRY, during the set. Released exactly one year earlier, the record has become an important part of her live show, blending sharp songwriting with themes ranging from personal experience to Ireland's economic and social history.
The title track received a particularly powerful airing, while the crowd also embraced some of CMAT's best-known live routines. Fans joined in with the "Dunboyne two-step" during I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby! and performed the choreography associated with Take a Sexy Picture of Me.
Her interaction with the audience remained a major part of the performance. At one stage she appeared with a pint of Guinness and encouraged festival-goers to let loose, while later she reminded them to look after one another.
As the final songs approached, CMAT paused to take in the size and energy of the crowd. She acknowledged how significant the moment was before stepping down from the stage and climbing over the barrier into the audience.
With her band continuing to play, she disappeared among the festival-goers as hundreds of phone lights filled the area. The crowd roared as she made her way through them before eventually returning to the stage.
For an artist who had been part of the Electric Picnic audience herself not so long ago, the moment offered a striking picture of just how far CMAT has come.
From an unexpected Jolene tribute to a high-energy run through EURO-COUNTRY and her biggest songs, the performance combined spectacle, humour and emotion. Most importantly, it felt like a genuine homecoming for an Irish artist performing at the biggest Electric Picnic stage of her career.
