Rick Astley Explains Why He’ll Never Ditch That Song

Rick Astley has long outgrown the “one-hit wonder” tag, even if some refuse to admit it. His career, which veered from 80s pop phenomenon to a triumphant middle-aged revivalist, proves he’s far more than Never Gonna Give You Up. Yet, unlike many artists who bristle at being defined by one song, Astley embraces it, proudly, openly, and without resentment.

Now, as he readies his 2026 Reflection UK Tour, Astley has clarified why the song will never leave his setlist.

“I see it in the eyes of certain artists where they have to play a certain song and they’d rather not, and I’m a bit the other way. I’m a bit like, ‘Well at least they’ll remember this one.’”

That humility sums him up. Astley knows the song is more than just a viral meme, or an 80s relic that survived through irony. It’s comfort music. A cultural artefact that still lights up festival crowds too young to remember it topping charts in 1987. He knows the power of recognition. When a crowd hears the first few seconds, they belong to him.

Astley insists the track’s longevity never soured his relationship with it, partly because his early retirement at just 27 spared him the burnout that ruins nostalgia for many artists. “All the nonsense” of industry life faded, and by the time he returned, he was refreshed enough to enjoy belting out his defining hit.

The 59-year-old does admit new material isn’t a priority right now. He’s still tinkering in the studio, but won’t commit to an album. Instead, he teases at least one new song per show: “It’s always fun and it frightens the band.”

That’s the Astley formula, balance the old with a taste of the new, without ever betraying the song that gave him everything. Never Gonna Give You Up isn’t an albatross. It’s his crown jewel. And he’s never going to give it up.
