Temperatures are set to soar to 30°C across Ireland this week, according to the latest forecast from Met Éireann.

The national forecaster has predicted a hot and humid start to the week, with temperatures exceeding 20°C in many parts of the country.

The southeast and south are expected to enjoy the warmest conditions, with highs ranging from 20°C to 27°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday is forecast to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures potentially reaching 30°C in some areas. However, the warm weather may be accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms.

The public is being advised to take precautions during the unusually warm spell by staying hydrated, protecting themselves from the sun, and exercising caution around lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water.

The forecast continues a trend of exceptionally warm weather seen in May, when record-breaking temperatures were recorded. On 25 and 26 May, Abbeyfeale in Co Limerick and Clonmel in Co Tipperary recorded temperatures of 30.9°C, setting a new record for the hottest May day ever recorded in Ireland.

European Heatwave

The heatwave is also affecting much of mainland Europe, where temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s.

In France, highs of up to 40°C are forecast today, prompting authorities to place emergency services on alert.

Restrictions on public alcohol consumption have been introduced in some areas, while numerous outdoor events have been cancelled as officials seek to protect public health during the extreme heat.
