Ireland’s national postcode system, Eircode, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week, with widespread adoption and over 197 million look-ups since its launch in July 2015.
Minister of State for Postal Policy and Sport, Charlie McConalogue, described Eircode as an “outstanding success,” praising its role in improving services for homes and businesses, particularly in rural areas where address duplication once posed major challenges.
Research shows that 97% of people are now able to supply a validated Eircode for their home address. The free-to-use Eircode Finder website averages two million look-ups per month, with 24 million recorded in 2024 alone.
A total of nearly 300,000 addresses have been assigned an Eircode since the system’s launch. In 2024, over 41,000 new addresses received their unique codes.
Capita Business Support Services Ireland Limited was awarded the contract to develop and operate Eircode in 2013. Its managing director, Gillian Chamberlain, said the system has become "an essential part of everyday life" and highlighted its integration across both public and private sectors.
By the end of May 2025, more than 2,650 businesses and state agencies had licensed Eircode for use in sectors ranging from logistics and navigation to insurance and utilities.
The National Ambulance Service also adopted Eircode into its dispatch systems shortly after launch and encourages the public to have their code ready when requesting emergency help.
Minister McConalogue concluded, “Eircode has delivered real benefits across Irish society, and I look forward to seeing its continued role in making services more accessible and efficient.”
