Disney has released the full High School Musical film on TikTok to mark the movie’s 20th anniversary, giving fans the perfect excuse for a nostalgic rewatch of the beloved Disney Channel classic.

As part of the celebrations, the 2006 musical has been uploaded in full on TikTok, split into 52 short clips, bringing the iconic film to a new generation and adapting it for modern viewing habits. The move has been widely welcomed by fans who grew up with the Wildcats of East High, as well as younger audiences discovering the film for the first time.

This week marks two decades since High School Musical first aired, and many fans are still stunned at how quickly the years have passed. Directed by Kenny Ortega, the film became an instant phenomenon, attracting 7.7 million viewers in the US on its original release and setting a new Disney Channel record.

The movie follows Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), East High’s star basketball player, and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), a high-achieving science student, after the pair bond over a karaoke duet at a New Year’s Eve party. Their decision to audition for the school’s Spring Musical disrupts the rigid social hierarchy of East High, much to the frustration of drama club stars Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin brother Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel).

At its heart, the film explores themes of breaking stereotypes, balancing multiple passions, and staying true to yourself, as Troy and Gabriella struggle to reconcile expectations from their peers with their love of singing. Their friends Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu) and Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman) are initially resistant but ultimately come together to support them — and even fall for each other along the way.

The soundtrack became just as iconic as the story, featuring unforgettable songs such as ‘The Start of Something New’, ‘Get’cha Head in the Game’, ‘Stick to the Status Quo’, ‘Bop to the Top’, ‘Breaking Free’ and the rousing finale ‘We’re All in This Together’.

Following the film’s success, Disney expanded the franchise with High School Musical 2 in 2007 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008, cementing its place as one of Disney’s most successful properties.

To celebrate the milestone anniversary, several cast members have taken to social media to reflect on the impact the film has had on their lives. Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel and Monique Coleman all shared tributes on Instagram, looking back on their time at East High and the legacy of the movie.

Ashley Tisdale, who played Sharpay Evans, shared behind-the-scenes photos and memories from filming, writing: “20 years ago we had no idea what this would turn into. I’m so grateful for what this movie has given me, and for the fans who made it what it is.”

She added: “To be part of something this iconic, that still has new fans discovering it today, is truly wild. It keeps growing in ways I never imagined. I love you, Sharpay. And let me just say… we’re still looking fabulous!”

Tisdale also delighted fans by revisiting Sharpay’s iconic outfits, posting a video of herself trying on costumes including the bright blue ‘Bop to the Top’ dress, Sharpay’s signature pink suit, and her sparkly audition outfit.

“Dug into my storage unit to revisit Sharpay’s iconic looks for the 20-year anniversary of High School Musical,” she wrote, adding: “You can take the girl out of East High… but you can’t take Sharpay out of the girl.”

In 2022, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens also reunited at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the film was shot, further fuelling nostalgia among fans.

Twenty years on, High School Musical continues to prove that its message — and its music — still resonates, whether on television screens or TikTok feeds.
