Dolly Parton has long been known for her generosity, but her latest act of philanthropy has left a lasting mark on her home state of Tennessee, with a donation so significant that an entire hospital has now been renamed in her honour.
The iconic country singer, whose fortune is estimated at around $450 million, has made a major contribution to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville, prompting the facility to be renamed the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital.
While the exact figure of the donation has not been publicly disclosed, hospital leadership has made clear that the scale of the contribution is extraordinary, describing it as nothing short of transformational.

Hospital president and CEO Matt Schaefer praised the impact of Parton’s generosity, explaining just how deeply it will shape the future of the facility and the care it provides. “What I can tell you is that she has made a generational and transformational commitment to Children’s and its mission,” he said. “And that commitment is something that goes beyond our wildest expectations, that is beyond generous, and will be a lifeline for this mission for now and for years to come. And we're excited about and humbled by her willingness to do so.”
The 89-year-old, not-for-profit paediatric hospital has served families across the region for decades, and Schaefer said the donation will allow it to expand in ways that would not otherwise have been possible.
Plans include recruiting more clinicians, investing in advanced technology, strengthening programmes and building on existing fundraising efforts to ensure long-term sustainability.
Beyond the financial impact, the renaming itself is seen as a powerful signal of the hospital’s ambitions going forward.
Schaefer noted that attaching Parton’s name to the institution will help raise its profile and broaden its reach. “[The name change] will allow them to tell a broader story about the depth and breadth of services here, to imagine how we can continue to expand those services, and it accelerates how we should think about what our responsibility is to the patients and families that trust us today and invariably will trust us tomorrow.”
He also highlighted how the partnership will boost awareness and support across the wider healthcare network. “What Dolly's partnership is allowing us to do, is to amplify and accelerate some of those initiatives in a way that we could not have done otherwise without that type of support,” he said. “And backing and awareness across the region, for providers, for clinicians, for patients, for families and for referring providers.”
For Parton, the decision to support the hospital is deeply personal and rooted in values she has spoken about for decades. Born and raised in rural East Tennessee, she has consistently used her wealth and influence to give back to the communities that shaped her, particularly when it comes to children’s welfare and education.
In a video shared on February 26, the 80-year-old singer opened up about the motivation behind her latest contribution.
“I've been in a position to do my part to help others. I have tried to do just that, especially when children and families need it most,” she said. “I've always believed that every child deserves a fair chance to grow up healthy, hopeful and surrounded with love. Now, that belief is what brought me together with the incredible folks at East Tennessee Children's Hospital.”
She went on to praise the work already being carried out by staff at the hospital, highlighting both their expertise and compassion.
“For nearly 90 years, their teams have provided compassionate and talented care. They see children not just as patients, but as precious lives, each with a story, and a future,” she said. “Together, we're committed to strengthening our relationship where world class care and a caring heart go hand in hand for children across East Tennessee and beyond.”

Parton’s latest donation is just the newest chapter in a long history of charitable work that has seen her quietly fund everything from literacy programmes to disaster relief efforts.
She is perhaps best known for her Imagination Library, which has distributed millions of free books to children around the world, as well as her contributions to medical research, including funding towards vaccine development during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the United States, large-scale philanthropic donations often lead to naming rights for buildings and institutions, particularly in healthcare and education.
However, the decision to rename an entire hospital reflects the exceptional scale and long-term impact of Parton’s contribution. It also speaks to the level of trust and partnership between the singer and the institution, which now carries her name into the future.
For families in East Tennessee, the practical outcome of this donation will be improved access to care, better facilities and expanded services for generations to come. For Parton, it appears to be a continuation of a lifelong mission to use her success to lift others up.
As Schaefer made clear, the full impact of the donation will unfold over years rather than months, but its significance is already being felt.
And in keeping with her reputation, Parton has once again demonstrated that her legacy extends far beyond music — reaching into the lives of children and families who will benefit from her generosity for decades to come.
