Helen Mirren has been presented with the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award, recognising her extraordinary contribution to film and television across a career spanning more than six decades. The honour was bestowed during Golden Eve, a special ceremony held in Beverly Hills that celebrates lifetime achievement recipients ahead of the main Golden Globes event.

The Oscar-winning actor, now 80, received the award from her 1923 co-star Harrison Ford, who paid tribute to her enduring impact on screen. Praising her craft, Ford described Mirren as an “undeniable screen presence” and said she brings “a powerful commitment to narrative and character” to every role. He also referenced their earlier collaboration on The Mosquito Coast, noting the consistency of her performances across decades.

Mirren, who won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, has previously received three Golden Globe awards. In her acceptance speech, she framed the DeMille Award not as a closing chapter but as a continuation. She described the honour as recognition of “a life lived”, adding that she hoped it would feel like “an ongoing reflection” rather than “a eulogy.”

Golden Eve also saw Sarah Jessica Parker presented with the Carol Burnett Award, which the Golden Globes describe as recognising “outstanding contributions to television on or off screen.” Parker received the award from her husband, Matthew Broderick, who recalled her early doubts about accepting the role of Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City — a decision that ultimately earned her six Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards.

Parker’s tribute included a toast led by Colman Domingo and an emotional address from her Sex and the City co-star Kristin Davis, with cast members from And Just Like That… also in attendance. Now 60, Parker reflected on a career that began more than 50 years ago, citing early inspiration from theatre and recalling watching her mother perform in Once Upon a Mattress, a production closely associated with Carol Burnett herself. She described her journey as “a privilege and a dream.”

The main Golden Globes ceremony takes place on Sunday, 11 January, and will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser.
