A sequel for the hit biopic, Michael is in the works, according to the head of Lionsgate Motion Picture.

Adam Fogelson, the chair of Lionsgate's Motion Picture, has hinted that a follow up movie could in the works. with the biopic having ended with the caption, 'His Story Continues', implying that a sequel was on the way.

Speaking to Variety, Fogelson said: “We are really excited about the progress we’re making with respect to a second Michael film", adding:  “All the conversations that we’ve been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well".

Following its initial release in April, 'Michael' achieved the largest ever box office opening for a music biopic, accrruing $217 million worldwide, finishing ahead of Straight Outta Compton, which opened to $60 million, and Bohemian Rhapsody which opened at $51 million. It has also earned the second highest film debut of 2026 so far, just behind The Super Mario Galaxy movie.

More on this here.

"pieces come together"

Speaking about the timeline for the second film, Adam Fogelson said: “Much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalogue were not touched upon in the first film. There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie that weren’t touched upon, so we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together".

He also hinted that this follow up biopic may not strictly follow chronological order.

“We can go forwards and backwards in telling this story", he said.

The film did receive some criticism after failing to include any references to the allegations of historic sexual abuse which were made against Michael Jackson during his career.

Originally, the biopic had included references to these allegations against Jackson, which saw him accused of sexually abusing young boys.

However, it was reported in Variety, that this footage was removed from the final product, including any mention of the charges of child molestation after conditions of a previous NDA were discovered. Jackson had been accusing of sexually abusing Jordan Chandler, who was 13 when the alleged offences took place.

But all references to these claims were scrapped after a previous NDA was found by lawyers for Jackson which prohibited the depiction or mentioning of Chandler in any movie. Following this, a new ending for the movie was filmed, concluding in the 1980s, prior to any allegations being made.
