Lewis Capaldi has revealed a very unusual hack he uses to help send him to sleep.
While launching new playlist series Music That Soothes Me on Apple Music, the 28 year old opened up to say he loves listening to Eminem when he’s trying to nod off.
He explained how listening to old school rap is just the tonic for a sleepless night particularly while travelling “If I’m going to fall asleep, especially on a plane, I put on Eminem because I feel like it really puts me at ease.
“I listen to a lot of the older stuff like The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show – for some reason it lulls me into a delightful little sleep. Or I’ll put on some of my own demos which also really knock me out.”
The Scottish singer also spoke about taking anti-depressants and returning to stage after believing he would never perform again.
“I am doing much better. I’m not on antidepressants any more. It was f***ing hard to get off it. You could say I’ve survived getting off Sertraline but let’s not get into that. This is happy stuff. I’m trying to share less.”
While talking to online therapists BetterHelp he accredited therapy with changing his life and helping hugely with his comeback.
“Therapy is the reason why I am able to be a musician again. I don’t think I’ll ever stop going to therapy after the impact it’s had on my life over the past two years. I think I will always be an anxious person, accepting that's always going to be there for me is a big thing. It's about how I respond to anxiety.”
Lewis made his comeback last month with a performance at Glastonbury, two years after he had to end his set early due to his struggles with Tourette syndrome. During the show, Capaldi sang his new track Survive and finished up with the song that crowds helped him to perform back in 2023, Someone You Loved.
Tourette syndrome causes sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and while there is no cure, treatment can help manage the tics.
He took to the Pyramid stage at the Somerset Festival with a 35 minute surprise appearance, though he admitted to leaking the secret performance himself as he was anxious nobody would turn up.
"I'm not great at keeping secrets, I wanted it to be a surprise, but we had to start leaking it out a couple of weeks before because it would have been strange to come out to an empty field. By that weekend it was the worst-kept secret. It was genuinely the best day of my life, I loved every moment of it.”
"Almost immediately, I was overcome with emotion and I started to well up, so I was like, 'get it together’, but then I turned around and looked at my drummer, and he was in floods of tears.
"It was weird, I knew it was going to be fine this time around. I had nerves and butterflies, but it wasn’t the same as 2023 when I was so stressed and I knew something bad was going to happen. It was spectacular."
