Emergency crews were called to carry out a late-night search and rescue operation at Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill, Galway after reports of a lone swimmer in difficulty.
Crews from Galway RNLI Lifeboat, Galway Fire Service, An Garda Síochána and HSE Ambulance Service responded to the incident after concerns were raised about the swimmer at the popular bathing spot.
As Rescue 115 was also making its way to the scene, it was confirmed that the swimmer had been located safe and well.
All emergency units involved in the search were then stood down and returned to their bases.
A spokesperson for Rescue 115 said:
"In RESCUE115 is now safely back at Shannon after tasking to Blackrock Diving Tower at Salthill on Galway Bay for a night swimmer overdue, tasked along with RNLI Galway Lifeboat, Galway Fire Service, Galway Gardai & HSE Ambulance Crews, while enroute to the tasking & with RNLI Galway Lifeboat already on scene & conducting a search it emerged that the swimmer was located safe & well & all SAR Units were stood down to RTB their Bases.
The incident comes during a particularly busy period for emergency services in Galway.
Over the weekend, Galway RNLI crews carried out a medical evacuation from Inis Mór after a person suffered a suspected spinal injury.
The Coast Guard was also called out on Saturday morning following reports of swimmers in serious difficulty at Mannin Bay.
Emergency services are continuing to remind people to take extra care when swimming, particularly at night and in areas where there are no lifeguards present.
