The RNLI lifeboat Annette Hutton was tasked shortly after 2pm and departed within minutes. The crew reached the casualty vessel approximately twelve minutes later, around one kilometre outside the entrance to Castletownbere Harbour.
Weather conditions in the area were challenging, with strong westerly winds of Force 6 to 7 and swells reaching up to three metres. By the time the lifeboat arrived, the skipper of the RIB had successfully extinguished the engine fire and all six occupants remained calm.
The RNLI crew established a tow and began bringing the vessel towards the safety of Berehaven Harbour. Once inside more sheltered waters, the six passengers were transferred onto the lifeboat while the RIB continued to be towed alongside.
The operation concluded safely, with all those on board reported to be unharmed. The lifeboat then returned to Castletownbere, while the RIB was secured in harbour and its passengers disembarked.
The rescue mission was led by Deputy Coxswain Sean Bawn O’Sullivan. He was joined by mechanic Donagh Murphy, Coxswain Joe O’Sullivan, and crew members Joe Cronin, Seamus Harrington, Dave O’Donovan and William O’Driscoll.
Boat owner Paul O’Shea praised the RNLI crew for their rapid response, noting that the lifeboat arrived within minutes of his call to the Coast Guard. He thanked the volunteers for their professionalism and efficiency throughout the incident.
Lifeboat Launching Authority Brendan O’Neill also commended the skipper’s quick decision to seek assistance, stating that contacting the Coast Guard immediately enabled the RNLI crew to respond before sea conditions worsened.
