The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says it's written to petrol retailers to remind them of their obligations under consumer protection law.

The CCPC received 83 complaints in relation to fuel prices over the past week, while the country saw record-high prices at the pumps.

On Thursday, an emergency measure to cut excise duty on fuel, saw the government bring in a 15 cent reduction for a litre for diesel and 20 cent for petrol.

However, on Wednesday the Dail heard claims some retailers had increased their prices ahead of the tax cuts.

Minister Troy had on Thursday asked his officials to work with the CCPC to ensure consumers are aware of their rights.
