Cuts to excise on petrol and diesel are to be phased out between November and the end of February.
This is part of proposals which will go before the Cabinet this morning, a week after the Government had announced that they were pausing the increases in excise planned for September and October following rising fuel prices.
Today, Tánaiste Simon Harris is to seek the approval of the Cabinet to extend the reductions in excise on petrol and diesel in what he claims will provide certainty to households at a time of volatility for the global energy markets.
Other proposals which are to be brought in by Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien, will see an extension to the reduction in the NORA levy until the end of October.
Once these proposals are agreed by Cabinet, a resolution will be put to the Dáil, which was recalled early from its summer break, and will sit for more than an hour tomorrow. They will hear the Government's intention to phase out the excise cuts across four stages from the start of November to the end of February.
If the increase in prices had proceeded in September, the price of petrol would have increase by 9c per litre, with diesel increasing by 10c per litre, bringing it to more than €2 per litre.
The Tánaiste has claimed that these proposals will provide balance between supporting consumers and manging the public finances responsibly.
Sinn Féin had stated that they would not support any resolution which brings about an increase in any fuel price in October.
The proposal is to be supported by Labour and the Social Democrats, but both parties have urged the Government to introduce a long-term measure to bring down these energy costs.
