Dolly Parton has reassured fans about her health after making her first major public appearance of 2026, telling supporters she is rebuilding her strength following a difficult year that included the death of her husband and several health challenges.
The country music icon, who turned 80 earlier this year, addressed fans during a keynote speech at the opening day of the season at her famous Dollywood theme park in Tennessee.
It marked one of her first public appearances in months after she stepped back from touring and live performances. Speaking candidly to the crowd, Parton explained that the past year had taken a toll on her both physically and emotionally. “I’ve not been touring, as you know. I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them,” she said.

Dolly Parton made her first major public appearance in months since a health scare last year for the music legend. At Dollywood’s season opening on Friday, she said, “I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them.”
The singer went on to describe how grief and exhaustion had forced her to slow down after decades of near-constant work in the entertainment industry.
Parton elaborated that the death of her husband had played a major role in her recent absence from the spotlight. “I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” she said, referring to Carl Dean, who died last March after 58 years of marriage.
The couple had one of the most famously private relationships in showbusiness. Dean largely stayed out of the public eye throughout Parton’s career, rarely attending industry events and almost never appearing in interviews. The pair met outside a laundromat in Nashville in 1964, on the same day Parton moved to the city to pursue her music career. They married two years later in a small ceremony in Georgia, and although Dean avoided fame, Parton often credited him as a constant source of support behind the scenes.
The loss of her husband came during a period when Parton had already begun stepping back from her usual schedule. In late 2025, rumours about her health began circulating after her sister unintentionally raised concerns during an interview.
Fans quickly worried that the legendary performer might be seriously ill, prompting Parton to reassure them publicly that she had simply been dealing with several manageable health issues and needed time to rest. The singer had already cancelled plans for a Las Vegas residency, explaining at the time that she wanted to focus on recovering her energy and prioritising her wellbeing.
Despite the setbacks, Parton has remained creatively active. Earlier this year she celebrated her 80th birthday by releasing a special new version of her 1977 song “Light Of A Clear Blue Morning.”
The updated recording featured an all-star line-up including Queen Latifah, Reba McEntire, Lainey Wilson, and Parton’s goddaughter Miley Cyrus. The collaboration was designed to honour the 50th anniversary of the song, which has long been considered one of Parton’s most uplifting and hopeful tracks.
The celebratory moment also included a surprise gesture from U2 frontman Bono, who arranged for a bagpiper to perform for her on her birthday, a tribute that delighted the singer and quickly circulated among fans online.
Parton’s recent months have also been filled with quieter creative work away from the stage. During her speech at Dollywood she explained that she had used the time to reflect, write new material and focus on rebuilding her strength. “I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But, all is good. It didn’t slow me down,” she told the audience. The comments suggested that although she has taken a step back from touring, she has no plans to retire from music or entertainment.
The legendary performer also hinted that new projects may already be on the horizon. “I’ve just been doing a lot of writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of praying and a lot of getting ready for a lot of new stuff coming up for the rest of this whole year,” she said.
“So, be ready for me. I ain’t done, I ain’t near done.” For fans who have followed Parton’s career for more than six decades, the message reinforced the determination that has defined her extraordinary longevity in the industry.
With more than 100 million records sold, 11 Grammy Awards, and countless classic songs to her name, Dolly Parton remains one of the most influential figures in country music history. Her impact stretches far beyond music, with ventures in film, television, philanthropy and business, including the hugely popular Dollywood resort that continues to draw millions of visitors every year.
While the past year has brought personal loss and health challenges, Parton’s latest appearance suggests she is slowly returning to public life. Her message to fans was clear: she may be taking time to rebuild, but the legendary performer has no intention of stepping away from the spotlight just yet.
