Love Island has received more than 500 complaints to Ofcom over the space of four days, with viewers raising concerns about the treatment of female contestants.

The ITV2 dating show generated 534 complaints across four episodes, according to Ofcom's latest weekly complaints bulletin.

The biggest number of complaints came after the show's Movie Night episode, which received 197 complaints. Many viewers claimed contestant Jasmine Gaziza Müller had been unfairly singled out during the episode.

Another 167 complaints related to the fallout from Casa Amor, when Angelista and Jasmine were left upset by the decisions made by Simba Kudyiwa and Kavan Murphy.

The episode featuring the now widely discussed argument between Lola and Julia, after Lola confronted Julia about her flirtations with Sean, prompted a further 75 complaints.

The latest figures come after viewers criticised what they described as the "women-hating" treatment of Jasmine, with some calling the behaviour shown on screen "unacceptable" and "predatory".

Love Island was also the subject of complaints earlier in the series. A few weeks ago, Ofcom received 186 complaints after viewers raised concerns about the behaviour of some of the male contestants, including backlash over a controversial kiss involving Tommy Murphy.

Many of those complaints centred on Tommy's interactions with several female Islanders. One storyline saw the Newcastle builder kiss both Namibia and Ellie on the same night before later attempting to kiss Priya.

Some viewers were particularly uncomfortable with Tommy's pursuit of Namibia during a conversation that ended with a kiss, with fans claiming the moment appeared "forced".

According to Ofcom, the majority of the 186 complaints alleged misogynistic behaviour towards female contestants.

This is not the first time Love Island has faced significant viewer backlash. Earlier this year, it emerged that Ofcom had rejected more than 14,000 complaints relating to alleged bullying during a previous series.

Complaints made to Ofcom do not automatically trigger an investigation. The broadcasting regulator reviews every complaint before deciding whether any further action is necessary.

The latest controversy comes during a series that has prompted frequent debate online, with viewers regularly taking to social media to discuss contestants' behaviour and relationships.
